You can directly compare electricity and gas costs when running an electric car vs. a conventional gas-powered car with the Department of Energy's eGallon tool. The range is about the same gas about 300 miles vs electric 280 miles. 

So comparing gallons to Killowatts might seem like comparing apples to oranges, but the Department of Energy, and their scientists, do all the math for us in this simple to use web app called eGallon.
